Check out Yonder Mountain String Band at the Tabernacle in Atlanta on 2/18/05. Futureman of the Flecktones guests on drums for the last 4 or so songs of the 1st set and the entire 2nd set and encore. I was at this show, and it was a mind-blower. Enjoy!

Gordon Stone Band. They make music ranging from thelonious monk songs arranged for pedal steel, bass, and drums to funky-reggaesque jams and all-out bluegrass stomps. Gordon switches between pedal steel and banjo and is phenomenal at both. The line-up also changes fairly frequently so there's always something new. Strongly suggest checking them out.

I just saw Arnett Hollow, a cool band in louisville KY a couple weeks ago...all the elements of bluegrass:
fiddle, banjo, amazing flat-pick guitar player, double bass, and guess what folks...drums...
check them out...not sure if they have anything on the archive, but they rocked live...they got a myspace page and a website..

Sorry, if it has drums it's not bluegrass, it's just twangy rock & roll. Cornmeal is an awesome band, and I've had a lot of fun at their shows, but they could be a lot better if they ditched the drums and got a mandolin. Bill Monroe was a mandolin player afterall.

can we not call it progressive or maybe even 2nd or 3rd generation bluegrass as over the years many non-traditional instruments have been used in plenty of bluegrass music?

You might also check out the Horse Flies; they don't always have percussion, and I'm not sure everyone would call them bluegrass ("acoustic dance music", maybe?), but they do inhabit that end of the musical spectrum....

Not that many unfortunately. YMSB don’t have any drums. If your looking for bluegrass with a groove (meaning with drums) maybe try, and I hate to be obvious, but Acoustic Syndicate or Blueground Undergrass. Two great bluegrass bands, with drums, that unfortunately aren’t playing much any more (if at all). Love Cornmeal though. Do you frequent Griffin's in Chicago?

Yessss!!!!! Acoustic Planet was one of the most fun times of my life. Caught the second-to-last show of the tour at the Fox in Atlanta (9/4/04). Unfortunately, YMSB's set on the Archive is marred by a few annoying people near the mics. I would love to see these bands all get together again soon, especially since the Flecktones are coming off hiatus in January. Maybe Acoustic Planet Part Two next summer?
I'll keep my fingers crossed. :)

Special Ed & the Shortbus is a bluegrass/jug/klezmer band with a full time drummer... Though he also plays the washboard and other miscellaneous percussion instruments...

Check out their 4/1/05 show for some flavour...
